Tidak ada lagi Paman Quentin. Ginger beer dan cream buns digantikan dengan pizza dan telepon genggam. Namun mereka masih punya anjing yang sama, Timmy.

Enam puluh tahun setelah Enid Blyton menciptakan serial detektif anak-anak ini , Famous Five - atau Lima Sekawan dalam edisi Indonesia - kembali diluncurkan oleh Disney dalam bentuk film seri cartoon dan buku.

George, gadis tomboy yang selalu marah dipanggil dengan nama aslinya, Georgina, digantikan oleh Jyoti, putrinya dari hasil perkawinannya dengan laki-laki berdarah India. Posisi Julian diganti dengan Max (13), anak laki-lakinya yang punya hobby sport. Sementara si bunggu Anne digantikan oleh Allie, puterinya yang lahir di California yang suka shopping dan gila ber-SMS. Dylan, anak laki-laki Dick, diceritakan sebagai penggemar komputer dan mengikuti perkembangan saham dengan laptopnya.

Thomas Sangster, Steven Spielberg's new Tintin

For those who remember, he was the young boy who gets the girl in the film Love Actually. For those who don't, Thomas Sangster may yet become a household name. The teenager from south London, according to the  Guardian , has been chosen by Steven Spielberg to be his Tintin for a three-movie adaptation of the boy reporter's adventures.

The Tintin trilogy is likely to give the 17-year-old the same profile as Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, or Elijah Wood, who shot to international stardom as Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings series.

JK Rowling merampungkan buku Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows di kamar 652  Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh Skotlandia pada Januari 2007. Ia menandai moment itu dengan menuliskan sebuah kalimat yang kini di pajang di atas marmer di kamar hotel tersebut: "JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (652) on 11 January 2007".

Seperti dikutip beberapa media, JK Rowling mengatakan bahwa chapter terakhir pada buku Harry Potter ke-7 itu telah lama ia gariskan "in something like 1990", saat-saat awal ia mengerjakan serial Harry Potter.

Pada 30 Desember lalu ada program menarik di ITV berjudul JK Rowling...A Year in the Life. Sayangnya beberapa video trailer program yang dibuat oleh James Runcie ini  tidak lagi bisa dilihat di youtube, karena alasan copyright . Video lain yang menampilkan program secara utuh tidak bisa dilihat dari luar UK. Hanya video dari the Leaky Cauldron.org yang sepertinya bisa dinikmati dari seluruh dunia, itu pun tidak dibisa ditampilkan langsung di sini karena secara teknis tidak memungkinkan. Tapi video dari Leaky-cauldron itu bisa di klik melalui link-link pada badan tulisan di bawah.

Saya akan coba untuk merekam suara dan menampilkan dalam bentuk podcast, akan lebih mudah  dinikmati, terutama bagi yang koneksi internetnya agak lambat. So watch this space.

Salah satu highlight dokumentasi kehidupan Jo, begitu pengarang buku serial Harry Potter ini biasa disapa, adalah bagian dimana ia menggambar family tree the surviving characters dari the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, keluarga Weasley dan sahabat Harry, Ron, dan Hermione yaitu Luna.

Charlie and Lola.....and Soren Lorenson

Tadi malam, setelah membaca buku Charlie dan Lola -yang ke seribu kalinya- dan ber-night night sleep tight ke dua dari jutaan anak pencinta Charlie and Lola, salah satunya  bahkan hampir selalu membawa buku Charlie and Lola ke tempat tidur, ya Alisha tidur besama Charlie and Lola! Saya menemukan cuplikan cerita berikut di The Times's Alpha Mummy:

I was at a psyche-folk festival in Wales this weekend when I bumped into someone who used to know Lauren Child - the fox-hot author of Charlie & Lola - on the Primrose Hill dinner party circuit. AND GUESS WHAT! Her boyfriend was called ... Soren!

Just think about that for a minute. Her boyfriend was called Soren! Already, it's amazing, isn't it? Almost as amazing as if he'd been called Marv, or Sizzles.

BUT GUESS WHAT EVEN MORE WHAT! Apparently, they broke up because he didn't want children, and she did!!!!!!!

This, then, means that the literary creation of Soren Lorenson - Lola's invisible conscience - is almost unbearably poignant. Soren Lorenson. Soren, Lauren's son. Their unborn child! Never to become flesh and blood - but born only in ink, and imagination. Alive as a shiny outline of morality and goodness, on the pages of the second-biggest-selling children's books of our children's generation. I still feel slightly giddy thinking about it all - even three days later.

The only annoying thing is, only people with kids find this gossip to be the dynamite that is it. Soren, Lauren's son. Soren, Lauren's son.

Dan tentu saja saya pun sama excited-nya dengan Caitlin Moran, kolumnis the Times yang menuliskan pengalamannya di atas. I love story behind A Story.

Tidak sabar untuk menceritakan 'penemuan' saya ini ke suami dan anak-anak. Wait a minute, tapi bagaimana saya menceritakan ini ke Kirana (6,5)dan Alisha (2,5)? Boyfriend. Breaking up. Imaginary child?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The world's first review

Tengah malam nanti, buku ketujuh dan terakhir dari serial Harry Potter karya JK Rowling akan diluncurkan.  Satu dari 48 rumah di Inggris telah memesan (pre-order) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, dan Royal Mail (kantor Pos Inggris) akan mengantar 600 ribu buku tersebut besok pagi.

Peluncuran buku ini melalui proses security  paling ketat dalam sejarah penerbitan. Namun the New York Times berhasil mendapatkan satu copy dari sebuah toko di Manhattan dan kemarin telah menerbitkan the world's first review. Review pertama Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows di dunia.

Berikut review oleh Michiko Kakutani (the New York Times) yang juga diterbitkan di the Guardian hari ini. Don't worry- it doesn't give away the plot or, crucially, the ending.

The Deathly Hallows: a sneak preview

In a trailer for the forthcoming ITV documentary, A Year in the Life... J K Rowling, the camera lingers long enough on a printed manuscript of the novel, dated 23 October 2006, to make the opening visible to the eagle eyed. It reads:

'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.

Chemotherapy, cake and cancer

Megan Blunt dan Nathaniel Burke adalah dua penderita kanker yang selalu menolak disebut brave, " We weren't brave, we were put in a situation and tried to be normal". Namun bagaimana cara mereka cope sungguh mengagumkan.

Megan misalnya, memberi hiasan pada infus chemotherapy-nya dan memasang lampu-lampu fairy di dekat tempat tidurnya di rumah sakit. Atau dengan menertawakan diri mereka sendiri karena setiap kali orang bertanya keadaan mereka, jawabannya selalu, "I'm fine".

Nat meninggal tahun lalu, dalam usai 11,5 tahun, 16 bulan setelah ia bertemu Megan di sal kanker sebuah rumah sakit di London. Kematian Nat memberi inspirasi Megan yang kini berusia 14 tahun untuk menulis buku petunjuk tentang kanker yang sangat bagus. Diterbitkan minggu ini oleh yayasan kanker untuk anak-anak CLIC, berjudul Chemotherapy, Cake and Cancer.

Life or death for Harry Potter

Pukul dua belas siang, saat asyik bermain dengan anak-anak, beberapa menit sebelum sebelum suami harus ke kantor, editor menelpon minta tulisan tentang buku terbaru Harry Potter.

"Untuk kapan Pak?"
"Sekarang Mbak, saya tunggu 2 jam lagi."

Saya pun minta tolong, "Mbak Kirana, please look after Alisha, Mummy need to work on the computer".

Thanks to Mbak Syl dan Kakak Cemara juga, tulisan last minute.com ini menjadi bernyawa. Not too bad eh.

JK Rowling has announced on her website that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last of seven instalments of the boy wizard's adventures, will be published July 21.

Bloomsbury, her British publisher, said it would publish a children's hardback edition, an adult hardback, a special gift edition and an audio book on the same day.

Breaking news untuk para penggemar Harry Potter, buku ke tujuh petualangan dunia sihir paling terkenal di dunia ini berjudul Harry Potter and the the Deathly Hallows.

Pengumuman di website pribadi  JK Rowling dan juga penerbit Harry Potter Bloomsbury mengakhiri spekulasi yang telah lama beredar di internet, dari mulai Harry Potter and the Pyramids of Furmat hingga Harry Potter and the Graveyard of Memories.

Namun judul yang diumumkan itu akan kembali memunculkan rumor baru mengenai apa sebenarnya "deathly hallows" tersebut.

A list of global bestsellers reveals that the French are patriotic, the Americans political and the British 'celebrity-crazy'.

A survey of global reading habits reveals that the book that Britons most like to read is ... a book that does not exist.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tops Amazon's bestsellers by virtue of advance orders: it is published on July 16.

The study, which was commissioned to celebrate World Book Day today, analysed the top-selling books over the past year sold to 47 million customers on Amazon’s six sites around the globe -- Britain, Germany, France, America, Canada and Japan.

Working with Paul Filmer, literary sociologist at Goldsmith's College, University of London, Amazon has read between the lines of what the Top Ten bookcharts of each country reveals about a nation.

Dan Brown's The Da vinci Code -- the story of how Jesus did not die on the Cross, but married Mary Magdalene and started a family in France, where descendants survive to this day -- appears on every country's bestsellers list other than Japan's.

With much of the novel's action set in their country, the French are displaying a patriotic approach. Half of the books in their top 10 are by Brown -- or focus on the themes raised in his books.

Germany has the largest number of works of fiction compared to the other countries. Classics such as Saint Exupéry's The Little Prince, first published in 1943, continue to rank highly alongside more modern classics.

Dr Filmer said: "The German list contrasts interestingly with the American taste for non-fiction ... The best-selling book (in America) is Jon Stewart's satirical take on democracy, based on his TV show.

But the memoirs of Bill Clinton reinforce his continuing popularity, and the presence on the list of the exposé of John Kerry's war record written by Vietnam veterans might have given an early indication of last year's presidential election result."

The Canadians are gripped by adventure books, the Japanese are obsessed with self-help studies, seeking guidance on anything from careers to housework according to the principles of Feng Shui.

Buku keenam Harry Potter kini menempati posisi pertama di daftar buku terlaris Amazon.co.uk, kurang dari 24 jam setelah tanggal peluncurannya diumumkan. It will not be published for another six months.

Harry Potter fans masih harus menunggu sampai 16 Juli 2005 untuk mendapatkan copy Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, tetapi pemesanan in advance sudah membanjiri website Amazon UK. Buku JK Rowling sebelumnya, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, memecahkan rekor pre-order dengan 420 ribu pesanan.

Rowling yang kini kekayaannya berkat Harry Potter diperkirakan mencapai 435 juta poundsterling (mengalahkan Ratu Inggris versi the Times rich list), sebelumnya berencana untuk mengumumkan tanggal peluncuran buku terbarunya 25 Desember, tetapi kemudian memutuskan untuk mengumumkan lebih awal. Tanggal peluncuran Harry Potter and Half-Blood Pince, diumumkan di website pribadinya, dengan menggunakan kode yang bertujuan untuk mengetes kecerdasan her young readers (and of older nerds--saya salah satunya).

Kode itu berhasil dipecahkan dalam waktu 20 menit (it wasn’t me). Salah satu kode terletak di tag Christmast presents, yang jika diklik akan muncul tiga pertanyaan. (salah satunya: What is Ron Weasley’s least favourite luncheon meat? *), jika berhasil menjawab tiga pertanyaan tersebut, akan muncul tanggal peluncuran buku keenam dari serial pemegang rekor penerbitan (263 juta buku terjual di 200 negara).

Menurut Ibu dua anak yang kini tengah mengandung anak ketiga itu, akan ada satu tokoh utama yang mati di buku barunya. Tapi ia menegaskan bukan Harry Potter!

Di websitenya yang telah dikunjungi 27 juta orang, JK Rowling mengatakan bahwa penerbitnya, Bloomsbury, merencanakan buku itu akan diluncurkan serentak di Inggris, Amerika, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa mulai pk 00.01 am (British summer time) tanggal 16 Juli.

Selain mendongkrak pemesanan di Amazon, berita peluncuran buku itu juga membuat harga saham Bloomsbury meroket hingga 294 pence per lembar. Nilai saham tertinggi yang pernah dicapai Bloomsbury.

Saya ingat ketika peluncuran buku kelima, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix antrian panjang terjadi di hampir semua toko buku di Inggris. Waterstone, salah satu jaringan toko buku Inggris, bahkan menggelar midnight opening bernuansa premier sebuah film baru. Di depan Waterstone Piccadilly itu, anak-anak dan juga orang tuanya mengantri dari pulang sekolah hingga pk 00.01 am GMT .

Malam itu Waterstone berhasil menjual 2000 copies. Sedangkan penjualan di seluruh Inggris di hari yang sama, 21 Juni 2003 mencapai 1,8 juta copies.

Dimana saya ketika itu? Duduk manis di sofa, menonton di TV dan mengagumi kegigihan mereka. Saya cukup pergi pagi-pagi ke Safeway, supermarket terdekat (5 menit) dari rumah saya untuk membeli satu (dan ternyata juga ramai berdesakan ). Menunggu peluncuran (di TV) dan pergi ke supermarket pagi-pagi juga hanya karena ditugaskan untuk menuliskan acara peluncuran itu.

Meskipun pencinta berat Harry Potter dan membaca bukunya hingga beberapa kali (sampai-sampai suami saya suka mengetes pengetahuan saya dengan isi buku Harry Potter dengan gaya cerdas cermat TVRI or kelompencapir-nya Harmoko dulu), I am not that militan!.
